Reflective Writing
Reflection week (2)
In our first and second week of Community Service Course our instructor has introduced herself to us by doing some activities to know more about her. Then, she discussed with us the real mean of Community Service and the importance of it especially in our country. We've also talked about Maslow’s Theory which is based on the Hierarchy of Human Needs through handouts that has given to us so we recognized the five types of needs which are ordered depending on its importance and priority as well. To explain that, we did an interesting activity between us by sticking some pictures based on Hierarchy Human of Needs. Additionally, we did some activities within team members which are considered an important tool of learning. Our teacher has also taught us how to take an effective note taking through handouts.
For me, the most useful learning was Note Taking Skills, I’ve learnt how to take notes through applying some strategies because I found that Note Taking process itself is very helpful and required in all of our courses so I have developed my skill in taking notes which was one of my weaknesses. For me, the most meaningful thing is working on activities within team member which will encourage us to communicate and share ideas with each other.
These two weeks were depended and focused on teamwork which is very important especially in our professional lives. Actually, I like to work as part of a team because through it I can have the chance to share our ideas with each other, develop our skills and achieve our common goals.
Reflection Week(3)
In our third week of Community Service Course, our teacher has started the class with an introduction about Human Rights generally and that by doing an activity within groups to come up with some Human Rights which are existed in our community. She has explained the topic more deeply through Power Point slides and handouts which are given to us to know more about Human Rights from its history till The Universal Declaration of it. Furthermore, we have discussed in pairs how these rights are related to the different levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. On our second lessen; our teacher has talked about Civic Responsibilities which means that a citizen can use the duty to act as a person to help his/her community. Then, we began to recognize the relationship between citizen’s rights and responsibilities.
I’ve learned that Human Rights are the basic rights by the fact of being human and its existence in our lives is very important and without it our lives would be controlled. I’ve had a background about the concept of Human Rights but I did not know that it has emerged after the Second World War. I think when people get to understand the real mean of Human Rights; they will be able to promote justice around the world.
In the beginning I did not have any idea about what does civic responsibility really mean but after that I got the idea that it is about being responsible to participate in and support the society.
By recognizing the 30 rights we will be able to have a secure and safe life. We will be also aware of knowing of rights in case someone has injustice me. I think civic responsibility includes responsibilities that a citizen must own. Volunteering is an example of civic responsibility which will allow me to share my skills as well as learning new skills while helping people who are in need so I can include that on my resume.
Reflection week (4&5)
In the first class of week four, the teacher has listed for on the board the examples of community services which are divided into two main things fund raising and act of service. Then, as groups we’ve classified those examples and started to discuss them with our teacher. In the second class of the same week, we had a written exam on the Hierarchy of Human Needs, Human Rights and Civic Responsibilities. Actually, the exam was pretty good but there were some difficult questions that made our marks to be lower.
In week 5, our teacher has shown us how to create an E-portfolio which allows us to include all of our assignments and reflections in an organized way. She has also given us a website that will help us to know how to make a professional E-portfolio. After that, she divided us into four groups by drawing lots to do a case study. Then, she had five magazines and we have chosen one magazine out of those five magazines. Our article was entitled ORBIS Giving the Gift of Sight which is a unique corporate charity hand-delivering optical care worldwide. Then, we shared the works among the group to be ready to present it in front of the class through power point.
Creating an E-portfolio helped me to improve my technological skills as well as my creative side. E-portfolio has also allowed me to share my learning experience with friends and instructors. For me the most important thing is using technology in our studies which can make it easier for me to learn. I found that “Giving the Gift of Sight Article” allows us to balance the selfishness and selflessness in our lives. I’ve also learned the importance of volunteering and helping other people in our lives.
By creating e-portfolio the information that I have included will help me to match my own skills with those required for the job. An Electronic portfolio can help me also to be more organized. By volunteering I will be able to put my work experience on my CV when I want to get a job. Working on case study within a team allows me to improve my communication skills which are required in any company or organization that I will be working in.
Reflection Week (6)
In the first class of the sixth week, the teacher has given us the time of the class to complete our project. Actually, we have been asked to choose two activities in and out the college so firstly we have chosen Orphans but then we have rejected the idea because there is no Orphans organization in our city. After that, we chose to talk about workers and we also refused it but after deep thought we reached to a great idea that will help many people which is Inspiration. We have contacted many people who are specialized in inspiring people one of them is INJAZ so we started e-mailing them.
In the second class, we have attended the lecture of Ali Al-Saloom which was about inspiration. Ali Al-Saloom is an Emirati national who came from Abu Dhabi to motivate and encourage us by telling us his story. In the beginning I did not know him but I just heard a lot about him so I really wanted to attend his lecture to know more about his experience in life to get us inspired. He started to talk about himself and his father so I really enjoyed and benefited.
I have learned how to do brainstorming which is considered to be a great way for finding a topic and generating new ideas for our project. I have also learned the importance of working group which allow us to share our ideas, skills and experience to accomplish the task given. I have improved my skills in self-esteem so I feel that I am more ambitious than before.
Working as a group allows us to improve our communication level which is needed in any career. Meeting also successful people like Ali Al-Saloom can give us the feeling to have self-confidence which is very important as well.
Reflection Week (7)
In week seven, we have had a presentation so we were about four groups so every group has done presentation which was about volunteering. All of our presentations were related to how to do small things with great love to help your community around the world. The first group was about the former nurse out to save the world so they were talking about a nurse who spent her life just for helping people. The second group their presentation was about Shanga Tanzania so they start talking about how Saskia Rechsteiner helped disabled Tanzanian people. Actually, they’ve presented such a great points. The third group was about a person his name is Thomas, he lost his legs in a boating accident and now he is helping children who also lost their limbs. I really liked the way that they’ve presented their topic. Finally, our presentation about Giving the Gift of Sight was talking about an organization (Flying Eye Hospital) that help children are suffering from blindness which were about 1.26 million. Actually, we’ve got great grades on it.
I have learned that as long as you help people the benefits will come back to you. I have also learned that dedicating our lives in volunteering and helping poor people are necessary because by helping others you will feel that you’ve made a big difference for someone else. At the beginning, I did not give voluntary work that attention but now I understood its importance in our lives. It was a great opportunity for me to read about these kinds of organization and charitable institution. I believe that by volunteering I will be able to change the lives of others which make me happy.
Volunteering can give us a great experience especially when we are looking for a career. Everyone in the community can volunteer and make a difference to other people even if it’s small. Volunteering will allow me to participate more to help the community especially in the future. I think that volunteering is kind of responsibility that everyone in the society should do it because it is part of humanity.
